Berne Guerrero's abstract
The iCommons Summit, an event in which 300 people from over 50 countries gathered to celebrate and strategise around a free Internet for all, was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia on 14-17 June 2007. One of the four tracks pursued during the main summit of 15-17 June 2007 (June 14 being the legal day, where the Creative Commons licenses were discussed) was that of the Open Education track, composed of various workshops such as "Collaborating on Open Education," "Open Educational Project Clinic," "Policy, Practice, and Pragmatism," "Propagating the Meme (Sharing Practices to Scale Open Education)," and "Towards an Open Future for Education." In said track, in one of the sessions, many open source projects were presented: OER Commons (through Amee Godwin), Free High School Science Textbooks [FHSST] (through Joanne Boulle), WikiEducator (through Steve Foerster), One Laptop per Child (through SJ Klein), National Education License for Schools [NEALS] (through Delia Browne), Acawiki (through Neeru Paharia), Educalibre (through Werner Westermann), Meadan (through Ed Bice), LeMill (through Hans Poldoja), among others.
The emphasis on community participation was made for the success, or for some initial success so far, of projects that a parallel emphasis on international community participation was being made towards the development of an international open education movement (especially during the track's last session for the summit). Now, being aware of the developments about open education overseas, how is the Philippine community being built towards open education, e-Learning, etc. within this jurisdiction?
